Majorities of Republicans and Democrats – 300 Cosponsors – Urge House Passage of Conservation Tax Incentive
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressmen Jim Gerlach (R-PA) and Mike Thompson (D-CA) announced today that 300 representatives have co-sponsored their bill to conserve America’s forests, agricultural lands and open spaces – more than any other tax bill. H.R. 1964 makes permanent a recently-expired tax incentive that allows modest-income landowners to receive significant tax deductions for donating conservation easements that permanently protect important natural or historic resources on their lands. Given lawmakers' ideological moorings, environmentalists didn't expect friendly results from this year's session, but for some, the Legislature's record on bills dealing with the environment exceeded their worst expectations. "We have not seen, in recent memory, an Arizona Legislature with such a poor conservation record" said Steve Arnquist, executive director of the Arizona League of Conservation Voters, which today released its annual environmental scorecard. The group culled and evaluated legislators' votes on 21 measures ranging from water and land conservation to state parks to species protection to air quality and budget issues. This year, the House's grade is 39 percent while the Senate's is 33 percent — neither of which is remotely near a passing mark. The group's litany of lamentations is long...for more CLICK HERE.
General issues
- State Trust Land
The management tools need to be reformed. Some land (such as Daisy Mountain) needs to be set aside as a preserve. Arizona State Land Department needs better tools to manage the land - See Explanation.
State Parks Issues
- Check out Arizona State Park Privatization and Efficiency Plan also - it is to craft a reasonable, realistic, and tactical approach for the state park system to maintain its viability while attending to the financial needs of the State and the political issue of appropriately sized government. The next step is the creation of task force or commission by the Governor to direct the process. Link here to download the full study.
