In December 2003 NCC had it's first official meeting in which the Board of Directors approved the slate of officers as well as set plans to filing the Arizona State Land Department (AZSLD) Arizona Preservation Initiative (API) application. To help in this effort, Maricopa County donated $1000. Arizona State Land Department assigned NCC's API case file # 35-108131; the case was never reviewed due to the legal problems of the API program. March 2005 – NCC helped coordinate efforts that stopped the Arizona State Land from designating potentially high density zoning for the state land including Daisy Mountain. March 2006 – NCC joined the Land Trust Alliance, a national organization that shares information and resources to help its members expand knowledge and expertise to protect land. We agreed to abide by their Land Trust Standards and Practices (guidelines for responsible operation of a land trust, which is run legally, ethically, and in the public interest and conducts a sound program of land transactions and stewardship. 2006 to present – NCC works with the coalition striving to have the Arizona Constitution changed to allow some State Trust Land to be set aside as protect preservation land. 2008 to present - NCC enters into agreement with Black Canyon City Community Association to acquire and monitor a conservation easement of the Black Canyon Heritage Park. NCC applies for grant to fund acquisition. 2008 to present - NCC continues to expand its programs (hiking, presentations, walking stick workshops, tabling, etc) to raise the community's awareness of the threats facing Daisy Mountain and other open spaces. This has been possible due to the strong support base of donors and volunteers. |
